Safe Hands

Safe Hands

Words and music by Kieran Barry Violet

Eyes which tell a thousand lies

And a smile that could never ever

Go out of style

Your grace even when it’s out of place

Is always easy on the eye

And another reason why

I hang on to the coat-tails of

This roller-coaster ride

Your voice with its low and lazy drawl

Must surely top my list of

Favourite things of all

So take me to the Paradiso

Hold me close

Like you’ll never let me go

This bad old world

Can do no harm

When I’m in your arms

And I’m glad

That I know

There is always a light on

Even if it’s low

This has to be the closest thing I’ve ever written to a ‘jazz standard’ which is odd as it started to come to fruition on the same night ‘Chemistry’ did – the closest thing I’ve ever written to a pop song. My vocal is not nearly as good as it should be but we never got around to redoing it.

Sax player Gary Baus was so taken with the song he introduced it to an ensemble he was playing with at the time called ‘Anita Williams and Rouge’. They released it as a single under the title ‘Take me to the Paradiso’. You can see a video of their recording here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXhjU102ZIs

And my long-term co-writing partner, ex-flatmate and dear friend Jason Anderson recently recorded this version under the original title. Just one man and his guitar – fantastic …
