Darlene

Words and music by Kieran Barry Violet

Darlene moved her things into a trailer

Somewhere outside Livingstone Texas

She married a man who’s there in prison

But he found Jesus

On death row

(Jesus on death row)

Darlene used to be

Employed as a secretary

But Darlene she went a little crazy

Darlene went a little crazy

Oh Darlene why won’t you see

You were made for me

And I am the only man

For you Darlene

Her folks came from Junction City Georgia

Moved out west to Albuquerque

Raised her there

She grew like a flower in the desert

Between a million dollar smile

And a thousand yard stare

So when he’s lost that last appeal

You’ll be free and together we

Can make it real

Darlene why won’t you see

You were made for me

And I am the only man

For you Darlene

Eamon ‘bones’ Connolly, trombone, Paul Moore, violin, Paco Cuenca, drums, KB Violet, guitar/vocals, Pat Comerford, lead guitar and Mike Burgess on bass. The cat is Ozzie.

According to our narrator in this story Darlene is clearly a bit crazy since she’d rather marry a death row prisoner than him. He still wants to marry her though so maybe he’s the crazy one. It’s one of those ‘complicated affairs’ I warned you about.

Why we dressed up in white overalls I don’t know but I did find out later that all death row inmates in Greenville Penitentiary (I think I’ve got the name right there, anyway it’s the one just outside Livingstone where Texas carries out all its executions) are required to wear white overalls.

Weird …
