Almost Never
Words and music by Kieran Barry Violet
Stormy weather almost never
Troubled me
I love the sound of raindrops
On the rooftops while I sleep
Though gale-force winds
May be deadly things
For those who chose the sea
Stormy weather almost never troubled me
The morning brings salvation
From self inflicted wounds
The questions only answered
For those who know the truth
Though triumphs may have seemed to be
So few and far between
Stormy weather almost never
Troubled me
Nights
There have been some long nights
When the moonlight
Made me crazy with the maybe
And the what might have been
Stormy weather almost never
Troubled me
I love the sound of raindrops
On the rooftops while I sleep
When Shandon bells
Have a tale to tell
They whisper to the Lee
Stormy weather almost never
Troubled me

I’m pretty sure the audio here comes from a Cork Jazz Weekend gig by Letters to the Echo but not 100% certain. What I can say with confidence is that this is definitely our bass player, Mike Burgess (a fabulous songwriter in his own right – look up the Brain Waves) and camera work was done by Kate Kalin. How she managed to capture the whole thing without shivering it into one big blur I’ll never know!
This is a ‘read between the lines to find the real story’ type of song. It’s not called ‘Almost Never’ for nothing. Suffice to say, the mournful toll of a church bell in the smallest hours of another long and sleepless night can be …
Well, I guess it can be whatever you want it to be.
